Goal 2 - Why is it an important issue in Illinois?
Birds are a fantastic “Indicator Species” that are easily assessed and help scientists determine quality habitats. Locally, the creation of avian habitat will create habitat for many other species, reduce run-off, and improve water quality. Birds themselves provide fantastic insect control, pollination, and recreational opportunities.
On a broad scale, increased habitat creation will be beneficial for migrant species and can reduce enough run off to increase water quality all the way down the Mississippi River and into the Gulf of Mexico!
IDNR has listed 50 bird species that are of greatest conservation need. This includes threatened and endangered species rare and declining populations, and those in vulnerable habitats.
