Highlighted ENTICE Class

Wild Illinois History

Pere Marquette State Park, Grafton
Saturday, February 1, 2025, 9AM - 3PM

Explore early French Fur Trapping History in Illinois at Pere Marquette State Park. This interdisciplinary teaching unit for educators of grades four through eight focuses on early exploration and settlement, riparian and geography of early Illinois and compares trapping from the past to the present. Both Illinois science and social studies standards are covered. The activities and lessons are designed to supplement Illinois history and science instruction and includes the uses of wildlife by Indigenous peoples and the trappers who came from Europe. Also highlighted is the conservation movement and how it affects views and uses of wildlife today. Educators of other grade levels are welcome to register and attend the workshop but may need to adapt the materials as appropriate. Supplemental resources will be provided. Professional Development Hours are available. This workshop is part of the ENTICE (Environment and Nature Training Institute for Conservation Education) program from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources.

Winter Birds

The Grove, Glenview

Learn all about the winter birds that live in Illinois, from songbirds to birds of prey. Participants will learn what adaptations birds have, to make them so successful to withstand the harsh Illinois winters. Appropriate for educators in grades K-4, but educators for all grade levels welcome but may need to adapt the activities and resources to be appropriate for older students. Please make sure to dress for the weather, as we will be going on the trails to look for signs of birds in the winter. Supplemental resources will be provided. Coyote Track

This online site centers around coyote ecology and behavior related to data collected from radio-collared coyotes in urban and rural areas of Illinois. Using real data, this workshop will guide participants through the visualization data tool and standard-based lessons that support the unit. Participants will learn about how and why scientists are studying coyotes in Illinois including learning about telemetry and how the information is gathered. The workshop is for teachers of Illinois high school and middle school students. Professional Development Hours are available. Tracking Animals & Adaptations

Have some wintry fun this season at The Morton Arboretum! Learn how to utilize the winter season to teach students about how to find and track animals, and their adaptations for the seasons. Wildlife Basics: Reptiles & Amphibians

This workshop for educators of grades prekindergarten through 12 will provide an introduction to and educational resources about the wild reptiles and amphibians in our state. We will show you how to use the topic of "Illinois wild reptiles and amphibians" to support the teaching of several of the Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards for science and Next Generation Science Standards with your students. Illinois Butterflies

Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum, Chicago

Flutter in and join other educators of grades prekindergarten through four as we are introduced to the butterflies of Illinois! The emphasis of this workshop will be on butterfly conservation and the related work of staff members of the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum in the field and lab. Information on developing butterfly habitat on the school grounds and how to incorporate learning activities related to it will also be included. Correlations between the information presented and Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards and Next Generation Science Standards will be addressed. Illinois Tree Squirrels

How much do you really know about squirrels? Come to this workshop and learn about the life history of Illinois' tree squirrels. We will go for a hike to observe squirrels and evidence of their presence. We will look at how you can use squirrel observations to help you meet some of the Illinois Early Learning and Development Standards in science and Next Generation Science Standards and will introduce you to Project Squirrel, a citizen science program that can be incorporated into your teaching. Cryptid Connections!

Need an out of the box way to engage your students in ecology? Looking for a creative way to engage your learners in scientific principles while also investigating local habitats? This class will cover how using a charismatic enigma can get your students to be passionately curious about Illinois and the flora and fauna. When there are no perceived experts, how far can your students go to answer questions? Supplemental resources will be provided. Professional Development Hours are available. Explore the biodiversity of Illinois bird species during spring migration season! See birds up-close with a bird netting activity and learn about current bird research being conducted in east central Illinois. Bird adaptations and life history will also be discussed. Dress appropriately for a hike to search for birds and their signs. Discussions and activities will target grades K - 6, however, all educators are welcome to register for the workshop and can adapt the information as appropriate. Pollinators and Ephemerals

They buzz, flutter, and crawl and play a critical role in maintaining ecosystems and human food supply. Educators of kindergarten through eighth grade are invited to register for this workshop to learn about the importance of pollination, identify Illinois pollinators, look at spring ephemerals, and learn about the challenges they face in the modern world. Educators will take a walk to a pollinator garden on the visitors' center grounds. Supplemental resources will be provided. Professional Development Hours are available. Illinois Wetlands

Join other educators of grades second through ninth as we learn what wetlands are and explore the fascinating organisms that live in them. We will discuss the life history, adaptations, and identification of wetland species and will put the skills to practice as we visit and sample several wetlands on the grounds of The Grove, comparing the types of organisms found in the different habitats. Hands-on activities will be conducted, and you'll receive supplemental educational resources. Professional Development Hours are available. Pollinators and Prairies

Great Rivers Research and Education Center, Alton
Saturday, May 31, 2025, 9AM - 3PM

Join us at the National Great Rivers Research and Education Center to explore the importance of pollinators and prairies in Illinois. Participants will hear from a native bee expert. Explore activities that bring pollinator science to the classroom. The workshop will include a tour of the Palisades Nature Preserve, where National Great Rivers, forest ecology lab is completing a botanical inventory of the loess hill prairies found there. Supplemental resources will be provided. Professional Development Hours are available. Educational Resources Trunks and Packs

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources educational trunks and packs are available for loan from locations throughout the state. Trunk topics include wild mammals, trees, prairies, aquatics, invasive species, birds, fossils, pollinators, amphibians and reptiles, state symbols, and nature exploration for early childhood students. Teachers, homeschooling educators, scout and youth group leaders, nature center personnel, librarians, daycare center staff, camp coordinators and families are among the people who can successfully use these resources. A two week loan period is suggested. There is no charge to borrow the trunks/packs, although a refundable deposit may be requested.

Spanish Language Activity Books Available

Are you looking for some Spanish resources for your students. IDNR has several activities books available in Spanish. You can order a class set and it will ship free to your school (ISBE listed school for free shipping). Check out what is available on the publications page.

We want to hire you to be a Conservation Education Representative for Summer 2025!  While these are primarily fishing instructor roles, you do NOT need to be a fishing expert to be a great CER – a desire to teach youth about conservation is what matters. Tours available at the IDNR's Jake Wolf Memorial Fish Hatchery

Ever wonder where the big bass, plentiful panfish or massive muskie in your local lake come from? Come to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources' Jake Wolf Memorial Fish Hatchery in Topeka, Illinois, and find out! Now is a great time to visit Illinois' largest fish hatchery to see where many of your favorite sportfish begin their life. Jake Wolf Fish Hatchery accepts requests for scheduled tours, by appointment only, Monday-Saturday 9:00 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. Tour groups are limited to 15 people. Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks Educational Programming

Choose Starved Rock and Matthiessen State Parks as a field trip destination for your students, scouts and classmates! What better location to engage students in their natural surroundings than the trails, canyons, and sandstone overlooks of these two state parks. VoloBog State Natural Area Education Program for the Fall

Spring Field Trip Registration begins on Wednesday, December 4. This unique site in far northeastern Illinois offers 19 different nature & environment programs for school age students including Animal Adaptations, Aqua Safari, Birds, and of course the always-favorite Bog Life. Programs cover a variety of topics including natural science, social studies, history, and more. Winter openings are also available. Scheduling is by phone only – call Naturalist Stacy Iwanicki at 815-344-1294.

In addition, Volo Bog SNA partners with Openlands to bring their Birds in My Neighborhood® program to classrooms in Lake & McHenry Counties. This FREE program led by trained volunteers is in three parts – two in-school classroom visits, followed by a Field Trip to a local natural area (with bus sponsorship available). Tour of Little Grassy Fish Hatchery

Fall is a great time to visit Little Grassy Fish Hatchery! If you want to be a part of feeding the thousands of young Channel Catfish before they get stocked into lakes in the state, call us to reserve a tour. In addition to scheduled tours, our walk-in visitor’s center is open Friday through Tuesday from 8:30 am - 3:30 pm and Wednesday and Thursdays 8:30 am - 2:00 pm with several informational displays and views of the production areas of the hatchery. Our new site interpreter Mark Denzer also does local outreach to local and regional schools referred to as Fish Journeys! All ages are welcome! Star Party at Pere Marquette State Park

Join the St. Louis Astronomical Society for a star party at Pere Marquette State Park on Saturday, March 1, 2025, from 7:00 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at the Visitor Center (13112 Visitors Center Ln, Grafton, IL). Led by Simone Williams, this event offers views of the waxing crescent moon, planets like Mars, Jupiter, and Venus, and constellations such as the Big Dipper, Cassiopeia, and Orion. Telescopes will be provided for viewing opportunities.

Fulton-Mason Eagle Day at Dickson Mounds Museum

Join us for the annual Fulton-Mason Eagle Day event. The event features live raptor programs, hands-on activities and crafts for kids, and bird watching in various locations in Lewistown and Havana, Illinois. While Dickson Mounds Museum is the hub for this event, there are activities and educational opportunities around Fulton and Mason Counties, so be sure to check our website and Facebook page for updates of additional locations and an itinerary of the day’s activities. The event is FREE and for all ages!

Illinois Fish Art Contest

Calling all young artists! The Illinois Fish Art Contest, hosted by the Illinois Conservation Foundation in partnership with Wildlife Forever, invites K-12 students to explore the wonders of fish and their habitats through art. Create an original artwork of any native Illinois fish species and submit it with a written piece (optional for K-3) for a chance to win awards and recognition! Contest rules, artwork specifications, lesson plans and more can be found at ilconservation.org/fishart. Deadline to submit entries is February 28, 2025.
